Change seems to be the popular theme lately so it seemed like a timely topic for the Cat 5 Corner. There is a saying that states, “The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect different results”. This quote is often attributed to great thinkers like Benjamin Franklin or Albert Einstein. But if you believe the internet (and who doesn’t?) it actually comes from a 1980’s mystery novel, ‘Sudden Death’ written by Rita Mae Brown. I think we can learn a couple things from that….. Geniuses sometimes get more credit than they deserve, and every now and then even we ordinary people can have great ideas! Back to the subject of Change..… Hopefully you have set new goals for yourself this year, but have you changed the type of riding you are doing in order to reach those goals? Maybe you have a fitness goal, or a weight loss goal. Your goal could be a racing goal, a category upgrade, a top ten finish, or even just to participate in your first race. Whatever your new goals may be, now is the time to change what you did last year so you can grow as a cyclist and reach those new goals. One easy way to make a change is to do a different ride than your normal ride. Check the calendar and look at the ride descriptions and find one that meets your needs. Or you can check the forum for posts about rides that may not be on the calendar. Riding with a new group of people or on roads that you don’t normally ride on can be a great change of pace and add something new to your workouts. You can move up from a beginner to an intermediate ride to challenge yourself, try out a race team ride if you are interested in racing, or go out with the ultra milers and ride your first century! Even a small change could make a big difference in reaching your goals this year. Last but certainly not least there is one more change worth mentioning. Casey “Super Clyde” Briscoe has accepted the role as Captain for the men’s Cat 5 racing team. So if you get the chance, congratulate him on his recent promotion! Congrats Casey!
