May is for racing......
If you have held off on racing due to time, travel distance or any other particular reason, May is the month you have been waiting for! There are four races in the month of May right here in the Houston area and they promise to have a little something for everyone…..
May 3rd, The Medical Colleagues of Texas Road Race in Coldspring. A fun course that includes some of the best hills in the Houston area, including a nice long finishing hill. At only 30 miles for the Cat 5’s, it’s a very manageable distance, so if you haven’t raced before and are thinking about it, this is a great place to start!
May 4th, The Sugar Land Criterium. A first time event in the Sugar Land Town Square. A combined 4/5 field with curbs and cobble stones, people and poles, tight turns on a technical course…..what more could you ask for? This is sure to be an instant classic, or at the very least a one hit wonder!
May 17th, The Bear Creek Crit. As the first race I ever entered, this place is near and dear to my heart or maybe that was the pain that was seared into my lungs…… A short, fun loop on a smooth tree lined trail that winds through the park. Another great venue for a first time race, no curbs or road hazards to contend with and only one tight turn. A good race for spectators as well since you can set up camp in one spot and still see the entire course.
May 18th, The Houston Grand Crit. A fast crit in the shadow of the downtown skyline. It’s an out and back course with tight turns and long straight-aways. Another good spectator event complete with bleachers at the start/finish line. Not only guaranteed to be a great day of racing, but possibly one of the best schwag bags you will get all year! (not to mention last year’s free food and beer)
So, if you are ready to race, May is your month! Keep an eye on txbra because the Cat 5 fields can fill up fast and you do not want to miss out. With the weekend rides and Tues/Thurs hammerfest in full swing, I am looking forward to seeing some great results from the 5’s as well as the rest of the WCCRT!
